Tommie Edward
Mcilvain
Oct 21, 1944 — Jun 5, 2026
Tommie Edward McIlvain passed peacefully from this life on June 5, 2026, with his wife of nearly 62 years, by his side, offering comfort and companionship in his final moments.
Tommie was born on October 21, 1944, to Ottis and Alpha (Terrell) McIlvain. He was raised in a Christian home in the Houston area alongside his sister, Mary, where he learned the values of faith, hard work, honesty, and family that would guide him throughout his life.
As a young man, Tommie spent two years courting the love of his life, Sherrill James. Their love story led to marriage on July 16, 1965, and together they built a beautiful life centered on faith, family, and devotion. They made their home in Bangs, Texas, where they raised their family and created countless cherished memories.
Tommie spent his working years in construction, earning a reputation as a man of integrity who always did what he said he would do. A handshake from Tommie carried the weight of a signed contract. His work ethic was unparalleled, and he was known for his attention to detail and determination to do every job the right way. Friends and family often said that if Tommie built it, it was built to last a reflection of the pride and care he put into everything he did.
Though hardworking and dependable, Tommie was defined most by his quiet grace, humility, and kindness. He was a man of few words but possessed a generous heart. Throughout his life, he put others before himself and worked tirelessly to ensure his family was provided for. He faithfully balanced work, family, and church, making time to attend events involving his children or grandchildren. He was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Bangs and lived out his faith through service, commitment, and the example he set for others.
Tommie found joy in life's simple pleasures. He loved hunting down at "the place" with family, checking cows, and spending time outdoors. He was a man's man strong, dependable, and resourceful yet gentle in spirit. Though quiet by nature, he possessed a quick wit and enjoyed a good laugh. Tommie taught life's most important lessons not through words, but through the way he lived honestly, humbly, and with genuine respect for others. Tommie was also known for having quite a sweet tooth. No matter how full he claimed to be, he could always find room for an extra piece of homemade pie or dessert. In fact, those who knew him best would tell you that if there was one thing Tommie loved almost as much as his family, it was sweets.
His family will remember his steady presence, his quiet strength, and his quick wit. Though his chair may now sit empty, his family finds comfort in knowing that the lessons he taught, the love he gave, and the example he set will remain with those who were blessed to call him husband, Dad, Papaw, and friend.
Tommie is survived by his loving wife, Sherrill James McIlvain; his daughter, Karen Barker and husband Chip Barker of Bangs; his son, Keith McIlvain and wife Michelle McIlvain of De Leon; his grandchildren, Kreede McIlvain, Blake Barker, and Kallen McIlvain; and a wide circle of extended family and friends who will miss him dearly.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ottis and Alpha McIlvain, and his sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Marvin Whidden.
A visitation will be held on Monday, June 8, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Blaylock Funeral Home in Brownwood, Texas.
A graveside service will be held Tuesday, June 9, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at Trickham Cemetery.
