Richard George
Hoffman
Feb 20, 1944 — Aug 1, 2023
Richard (Rick) George Hoffman, II passed away on August 1, 2023, in Bryan, Texas. He was born February 20, 1944, in Corsicana, Texas, the oldest of four children born to Richard George Hoffman and Virginia Mae Whitefield Hoffman. He married Linda Wiliece (Kuykendall) Christian on February 13, 1982, in Plano, Texas, where they had met in a singles bible class at Pitman Creek Church of Christ. They resided in Plano until December, 2023, when, due to health conditions, they relocated to Bryan/College Station.
Rick's father, Richard, was serving in the Army Air Corp in Corsicana when he met Virginia on a blind date. Richard became a flight instructor/trainer and duty assignments took the family to Florida then to Nevada for short periods of time. Upon completion of Richard's military service, the family moved to Colorado where he flew for Frontier Airlines. The experiences Rick had with his father flying sewed the seed of his love for anything aeronautical. Rick attended school and graduated from high school in Aurora, CO in 1962. He then attended Abilene Christian College for one year before transferring to SMU in Dallas where he pursued his degree in Engineering and graduated in 1968. While at SMU he worked part-time at Texas Instruments as a coop student and upon graduating went to work for TI full time as an engineer in their military products division. Later this unit was sold to Raytheon Technology where Rick worked until his retirement in 2004 after completing forty years of service with the two companies. Rick, a Professional Engineer, was, also, an active member of the Optical Society of America.
While courting Linda Wiliece he often sent bouquets of Sonja roses to her office. She became the envy of the women. Even after their marriage Rick always sent roses to her on their anniversary, Valentines Day, Mother's Day, birthday, and sometimes just to send flowers. He would never pick up a prearrangement, but always personally selected the flowers for the arrangement.
He had a very curious mind. A deep, analytical thinker, he was always wanting to know how and why things worked as they did. His tenacity in sticking with a seemingly unsolvable problem made him a great engineer. Being an inventor, a tinkerer, and a fixer at heart, he was always looking to make something that would benefit others. His love of family and country pushed him forward in his very successful career with TI and Raytheon.
Rick was a deeply religious person having accepted Christ as his savior at the age of twelve and remaining a faithful member of the church of Christ on McDermott Road until his death. He was never late to church services as he wanted to sit quietly before services began to get his thoughts center on the purpose of his being there. Wearing a coat and tie on Sundays were mandatory in his mind. He studied the scriptures daily whether at home or on the road with company business. One would always find a Bible on his desk at work. He loved to study the Bible with whomever he could.
He was a lover of animals especially dogs. Most family photos (even from an early age) show him holding a cat or playing with dogs especially miniature Schnauzers. They always knew they would be welcomed in his lap. The pets always traveled with the family on trips to Colorado to visit his parents. Rick even bought a custom van for these trips so the dogs and children would be comfortable as he drove through the night to get there. On all road trips Dairy Queen was the place of choice to stop to eat. He recalled many times how his grandfather, Foy Whitefield, always wanted to own a Dairy Queen franchise. Rick loved going to the family place in Cherokee where he had a big red tractor that he would spend hours on mowing and improving the land. He sincerely appreciated God's creation. The tractor was his pride and joy second only to his Dodge Ram diesel truck - possibly his most valued earthly possession. Rick was also a licensed pilot. A little known tidbit about Rick is that he had a motorcycle as a teenager. Yes, our quiet, mild mannered Rick was a biker much to the chagrin of his mother!
Rick is preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Virginia Hoffman, and brothers
Ronald Steven Hoffman and Dan Phillip Hoffman. He is survived by his wife of forty one years, Linda Wiliece, children George Timothy Hoffman and wife Mila of Plano, TX, Jefferson Dale Christian and wife Jennifer of College Station, TX, and Tiffany Dawn Riordan and husband, Shea, of Iola,TX. Left behind to cherish his memory is his sister, Barbara Hoffman and husband, Michael Short, of Cleveland, OH and seven granddaughters, Natalie Anne Christian, Alanna Kate Christian, Charlotte Rose Riordan, Gillian Violet Riordan, Emily Claire Hoffman, Adalene Grace Christian, and Elizabeth Claire Christian as well as numerous cousins and nephews, professional colleagues and brothers and sisters in Christ.
