Marillyn Lovell Hawkins

Marillyn Lovell Kuykendall Hawkins passed away February 5, 2024 near Cherokee. She was born to Johnson and Cloma Kuykendall in Cherokee 96 years ago. Marillyn grew up working cattle, sheep and goats beside her parents and brother M.J. She was a 1945 graduate of Cherokee High School. After high school, she moved to San Angelo to attend Shannon School of Nursing. While attending classes she agreed to her one and only blind date. She met and fell in love with a handsome Army veteran, Steward Hawkins Jr. They married December 12, 1948. In June 1948, she graduated and started her over 30-year nursing career at Shannon. They soon started a family consisting of five children. They were both involved with Boy and Girl Scouts, Lions Club, church and school activities. After retiring from nursing and Hawkins Battery Shop, they moved back to Cherokee where they continued their community service while enjoying retirement. Marillyn's idea of retirement was reading a good book, sewing and cutting cedar with her trusty chainsaw.

Jr and Marillyn were married 50 years before his death in 1999. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her brother M.J., son-in-law Jim Hutchinson and great grandson Ryan Owen. She is survived by her children Kirk (Reggie) Hawkins, Ann (Dave) Watson, Jan Hutchinson, Kay (John) Clark, John (Joann) Hawkins, 15 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren and 7 great great grandchildren. She is also survived by her cousin Lovell Kuykendall and many nieces and nephews.
