Obituary

Jarvis Gossett

Jarvis Leland Gossett joined Heaven's army on February 10, 2024. A memorial service for Jarvis will be held at the First Baptist Church in San Saba on Friday, February 23, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. and will be officiated by Pastor Welton Watson. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Blaylock Funeral Home in San Saba.

Born on February 20, 1949, to James B. (Red) Gossett and Cleo Jones Gossett in Llano, Texas, Jarvis moved to San Saba, Texas with his family in 1950. Jarvis grew strong and tall during his school years in San Saba where he played football for the Golden Armadillos. Those who remember Jarvis from those years remember him as a rambunctious, fun-loving rapscallion. After high school, Jarvis served two tours in Vietnam. Conversations with his war buddies indicate that on several occasions, Jarvis' heroic actions saved the lives of several of the men in his platoon.

To many, he appeared to be a tall, broad-shouldered, no-nonsense mountain man. Someone once referred to him as Grizzly Adams without the beard. He would not have backed away from wrestling a bear barehanded and would take on the devil to protect the underdog. Yet, those of us who knew him well also saw the tender side of the man. As a seven-year-old boy, he swam across the Colorado River to save a mangy cat. In his later years, he was a gentle lamb when dealing with his Alzheimer stricken mother. Hearing Taps would bring tears to his eyes, and he would give a neighbor the shirt off his back if needed. He was truly a paradox: a warrior with the courage of Hercules with a heart as tender as Mother Teresa.

After spending much of his working career laying pipelines in the Western U.S., Jarvis returned to San Saba where he married his high school sweetheart, Mary Taff. Jarvis loved to hunt and fish, and when he was not caring for their ranch, he could be found on a river or lake with a rod and reel in his hand or in the field with a gun at his side. He also became very active in Texas Hunters for Heroes, a group of veterans from the San Saba area, who provide assistance and opportunities for wounded veterans to hunt and fish. Jarvis touched so many lives because no one who ever met him could forget him. He will be sorely missed by family and friends. Jarvis was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Bobby Gossett. He is survived by his wife, Mary Gossett; his stepson, Tori Mack; His brother, Dalton Gossett; his sister-in-laws, Judy and Jesse Gossett; and numerous nieces and cousins.
