Obituary

Donald Lynn Gunter

December 26, 1945 – June 16, 2026

Donald Lynn Gunter went home to be with the Lord on June 16, 2026, at the age of 80. He was born in Brownwood, Texas, on December 26, 1945, to Truman and Ola Mae Gunter.

After graduating from Brownwood ISD, Don went to work at the Brownwood Woolen Mill, staying right up until the day it closed its doors. He later spent 27 years keeping things running in the maintenance department at Howard Payne University, where he eventually retired.

Don was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle, and friend - and there wasn't much the man couldn't do.

Don lived most of his life with one arm, and exactly how he lost the other one he would tell you - a bar fight, sucking his thumb a little too long, or a machinery accident. Don would just leave that to your own imagination. Whatever happened, it never slowed him down. The furniture he built, the BBQ pit he cooked on, and the carpentry work he turned out were proof enough of how he lived, worked, and created with what he had. He also collected vintage beer cans and bottles, because every good man needs a hobby.

Don loved competing in chili cookoffs across the state, but his favorite by far was the Championship Cookoff in Terlingua - fitting, since that's also where he married the love of his life, Charlene. The two of them made the trip together with family and friends every year, right up through 2024.

Don cherished the loving, laughing people in his life, and he wanted every one of them to know the love and gospel of the Lord, too. More than anything, he loved his Lord, and he made sure his friends and family never doubted it. He leaves behind his peace, and a lifetime of good memories, for his friends and loved ones.

"We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord." - 2 Corinthians 5:8

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Gail Seifres, Travis Gunter, and Wayne Gunter; and his sisters, Marge Anderson and Pat Westfall.

He is survived by his wife of 43.5 years, Charlene Gunter; his son, Allan Gunter, and wife, Angie; his grandson, Dylan Gunter; his daughter, Leeann Gunter; his sisters-in-law, Eva Gunter and Faye Gunter; his sister-in-law, Karen Nunn, and husband, Jim; and a host of nieces and nephews.

"Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; do not be afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest." -Joshua 1 :9
