Bob Reams
Maxcey
Jul 2, 1945 — Jun 13, 2024
Bob Reams Maxcey, 78, passed away peacefully at Crestwood Nursing Facility in Swansea, Massachusetts on June 13, 2024.
Bob was born on July 2, 1945, to Hervey Reams Maxcey, Jr. and Monette (Talley) Collmorgen in McCamey, Texas. The family subsequently moved to Houston, Texas where he grew up and attended Jesse H. Jones High School; however, some of his most cherished childhood memories include spending summers and holidays in Central Texas (north San Saba County) with his first cousins who shared an exceptionally close bond. After attending Howard Payne University and the University of Houston, during which time he met his wife of 55 years, Carol (Peeples) Maxcey, he entered medical school at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. After graduating in 1972, he joined the United States Army, completing his residency in Diagnostic Radiology at Brooke Army Medical Center. He was later stationed at Darnall Army Hospital in Fort Hood, Texas where he served with distinction, ultimately acting as Chief of the Radiology Department, obtaining the rank of Major, and earning an Army Commendation Medal. Following his honorable discharge in 1979, Bob and Carol moved to Bay City, Texas where they put down roots and decided to grow their family. In Bay City, Bob served as the sole Radiologist for Matagorda County and Matagorda Regional Medical Center for over three decades, while also commuting to Houston several times a month where he worked for Mana MRI for over 20 years.
Bob was known to many for his infectious sense of humor, tremendous work ethic, quick wit, and striking intellect. A Renaissance Man, he enjoyed weightlifting, Ham radio, chess, and flying airplanes, at one point earning certification for every pilot's license available except commercial airline pilot and flying with Carol to the Caribbean. Bob was also an insatiable reader, who perpetually devoted himself to the pursuit of knowledge. After work, you could often find Bob sitting in his reclining chair reading one of his many large books on military history, theology, or philosophy. In the end, however, it was his cheerful disposition, generous nature, and steadfast love for his family and friends for which he will be most remembered. The ever-faithful provider who spent much of his life giving to others, he was the epitome of leading by example.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Carol Maxcey; his four children, Nathan Maxcey and his wife Nicole of Salt Lake City, Utah, Rachel Smith and her husband Ryan of Blacksburg, Virginia, Zachary Maxcey and his wife Jordan of Swansea, Massachusetts, and Catherine Luedke and her husband Matthew of Durham, North Carolina; and his eight grandchildren, Arlo Smith, Keira Smith, Jake Smith, Sam Luedke, Elise Luedke, Liam Maxcey, Annabelle Maxcey, and Josiah Maxcey. He is also survived by his two sisters, Nancy Hankins and her husband Danny and their sons, and June Beck and her husband Berley and their son; his brother-in-law, Terry Frazier and his children; and his cousins, Jill Landon and her husband Marvin and their children, Jim Maxcey and his wife Julie and their sons, Kay Nettleship and her children, Margaret Maxcey and her children, Dawn Boeke, Chante Tilden, Kelly Walters, Wes Jackson, and Britt Jackson.
