Obituary

Betty Dyar Locke

Betty Dyar Locke, 96, of West Monroe, Louisiana, passed away on August 19, 2026, at San Saba Rehabilitation, where she had resided for the past three years. Her warm smile and straightforward personality endeared her to the staff and residents, who became like family to her.

Betty was born on February 16, 1930, to B.H. and Ruby Upton Dyar. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dare Locke; her son, Gary Sugar; her sister Janis Evans and her great-granddaughter, Mallory Foreman.

She moved to White Deer, TX. in 1962 and married Dare Locke.

She and Dare shared a deep appreciation for history and craftsmanship, building a remarkable collection of Indian art and artifacts throughout their life together. Their home reflected their curiosity and respect for cultural heritage, and their collection became a meaningful part of their shared legacy.

Betty’s greatest passion, however, was her genealogy. She devoted countless years to researching her family history, traveling to courthouses, cemeteries, and historical archives, and corresponding with relatives near and far. Her tireless efforts to document and preserve her lineage ensured that generations to come would have a clearer understanding of their roots. She was known for her determination, meticulous attention to detail, and the joy she found in uncovering each new branch of her family tree. In 2012 Betty moved to Amarillo, TX. where she resided until moving to Lampasas Assisted Living. In 2023 she moved to San Saba Rehabilitation. Betty was beloved by everyone there and Solaris Hospice.

She is survived by her daughter, Carol Sugar Martin; and her sons, Bruce Locke and wife Sandra and Larry Locke. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Amy Martin Faught and husband Jim; Christa Martin Petersen and husband Jeff; Emily Martin Toungate and husband Chad; Christopher Sugar and wife Dusti; Stephen Sugar; Barrett Locke; and Jessica Groff and husband Matt. Additional survivors include eleven great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Betty will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by her family and all who knew her. We will be forever grateful to everyone and San Saba Rehabilitation and Solaris Hospice.
